Day Dream Nimbus and Rinkaku Custom Incoming!

I’ve been digging through my toy stash and found loads of goodies which was fun! Sometimes, I just forget what I have sitting around. So a little rummage is definitely something I should have more often.

I haven’t done any Rinkaku since last year when most of the year seemed to involve Rinkaku. You know it is one of my favourite Sofubi out there and how much I love working on them. Such an elegant and proud creature.

The inspiration for this colourway was a volcano or a cinder. Something that was burning from the inside but still gave the impression of a solid outer shell. I think I managed quite well…. they really do look like they’re filled with flaming hot lava.

Though my colourways are always unique and limited edition, I like to keep a theme with the Rinkaku. So you will most likely always see the same inspired pattern on its tail and some form of peonies by its right leg. If you collect my Rinkaku customs, they will look fantastic next to one another at a slight angle.

First, these beauties! I love incorporating these Japanese motifs and don’t think they are seen enough in the toy scene, even though they definitely are on the rise. The colours really pop against the black. I like to go over the base with my airbrush and fluorescent acrylics to give it that extra pop.

These Koi take an enormous amount of time to paint and perfect. I don’t know how many times I go over lines and highlights, but it is a lot.

I really pushed myself here and wanted to work with light! It took me some time to get it all right. I am used to working with rim lights and glow in photoshop, but to put it to work with acrylics was a whole new experience for me. The principle is the same but the execution is totally different.

Peony Sunrise - Custom Rinkaku

Hey hey! Hope all of you are well! I’ve got toys coming out of my ears at the moment but am enjoying every second of it. I would say that this is the busiest I have ever been in my almost eight (!) years as a toy customiser.

It has taken some time to adjust to the life of a working artist and I would say that this is the first month since the beginning of the year where I feel that I have been structured and so far completed everything that I should have. I find it hard to plan my time around school holidays and half-terms and I hope I can get better at this next year and plan a bit better beforehand as these times really do set me off.

Anywhoooooo…. back to the actual toy! This is my second collaboration with Frog Tree on their beautiful Rinkaku. The last one was a mad rush so I never had time to write about it, as it needed to get back to Japan in a rush. So I am happy that this one is less of a stress and is staying with me until sold.

If you follow me on Instagram then you know that Rinkaku is one of my most favourite Sofubi of all time, and I feel so lucky and privileged that Frog Tree wants to work with me over and over again. Yeah, we have many more collaborations coming up over the next few months!!!

I loved every second of this paint job. I rarely work with this much yellow as it can be pretty hard to get a good gradient of yellow without caking too much paint onto the toy. But this worked so well and together with the pink blush tones it gives a beautiful sunrise feel. With a strong light behind it will more or less glow. I tried bringing in some more oriental elements to the paint job which I think worked quite nicely. All in all, I am so happy with how it came out. Rinkaku has got such a beautiful sculpt that you don’t want to take anything away from it with too much paint. I think I managed to balance it quite well in the end.

I have had to put up my shipping prices to the US slightly as they have gone up so much over the past year that it is affecting me when shipping out your orders. I am terribly sorry for this but there is nothing I can do. I’m just hoping that they will get back to normal at some point, but for now, this is just how it’s going to have to be :’(
