"Geo Fox 22" - Digital Painting and Time-lapse

The second painting in line for my limited edition print run is finished. This is "Geo Fox 22" and here's the time-lapse for her as well.

I am really pushing myself in all artistic fields at the moment. I am determined to become a better artist this year and to master the fields I am currently in. I still want to learn to paint traditionally but I feel that I need more time to do this, time that I don't have at the moment. I want to get in to classic painting and I want to mix these techniques with what I've learnt from digital painting. However as for now, I have to settle with digital.

When I really want to do something, but don't find the time to, I tend to stop drawing completely. So what I've decided is to try to keep on top of everything in the best way I can. Just because I can't do classic painting at the moment doesn't mean that I have to stop evolving in other aspects, like the human form etc. So this is my focus now. To master the human form. After Toy Con UK I want to start taking life-drawing classes. I don't know where or how but I'm sure they'll be around somewhere. And by doing this I hope to become a better artist.

I will stick to my cartoony style, but that doesn't mean that I don't need to practice real anatomy. So I am really looking forward to this year to come. Weather I will succeed or not only time will tell. But I really do hope so, and I will work hard to make it so.

I hope you find my time-lapses interesting and that you might actually learn something from them. I find them great for myself in many ways. When you create and draw you tend to loose yourself, or I do at least. So it is great learning for me to go back and watch my own work. I learn an awful lot about myself as an artist and I can see where I should have stopped and what I should do differently the next time. I've especially learnt that I have a tendency to over work things, nit pick if you like. And I now know when it is time to stop and when the picture is finished. So I highly recommend that you record yourself whilst painting as you will learn so much. But don't forget to watch other artists work too, you will pick up so much knowledge and learn to apply many new techniques this way.

I use Debut Video Capture Software for my time-lapse which is free to use if in a non-commercial way. You can download it HERE , it is very reliable and you can get some really high quality videos with it.

Bubble Cloud - Time Lapse

It's been quite some time since I made a Time-lapse. So I thought it was about time I did a new one, and this pic was perfect for it!

I wanted to achieve a some-what retro look but with obvious modern touches. Since Sci-Fi's always been so dear to me and pop-culture as well I love to mix the different eras and they seem to work so well together.

Whilst I was waiting for "Bubble Cloud" to render and upload I managed to draw out the next on in line, so I thought I'd share her as well.

The Thundrolot Pup - Digital Painting

Whilst I've been waiting for various parts for the Space Crab I'm currently working on I needed a side project not to go insane. So I decided to work on this drawing a did a while back. I meant to paint her with inks and water colours but realized somewhere along the line that I probably wouldn't have time for that any time soon. And since I've been away from anything digital for a very long time, it came as a welcome break to sit down in Illustrator and Photoshop and sort of go back to my old ways.

I can't say that I was rusty at all and to be honest I think stepping away from digital art and working hard on my traditional art have made me a better artist digitally believe it or not. I've learnt an awful lot about colours and blending trough painting and it's definitely made a difference in me as a whole.

The last wheels for my Space Crab arrived today so I will move on to that next. After that I have a commission to complete. And then....... I'm going to try something new..... in time for Christmas..... Stay tuned!

T.B.T. - The artist I used to be

Since it is throwback Thursday today I thought I'd take you a few years back in time. When digital painting and sci-fi used to be my biggest passion. Funny how time changes you isn't it?
I went through a stage here where I learnt an awful lot about digital painting and the human form. Sky Doll used to be (and still is I guess) my biggest inspiration.

I also found allot of inspiration in comic books and super heroes in general. My aspirations as a digital painter were massive and I think the degree I was doing at the time really pushed me to discover the human form and anatomy.

This was the time when I started coming up with original characters and explore my mind as not only an artist but also a writer (if you can call it that). I never used to build up stories around my characters, but when we were asked to write a script for a film and read it aloud to the class it opened up a new part of my brain.

I really excelled when me and my other half decided to go to the Brecon Beacons and camp for 8 weeks in total. My other half worked as an extra on "Wrath of the Titans" and I decided to camp for the whole time as well. I do love camping but staying in a tent that long did drive me a bit mad I think. I found myself out in the woods looking for sticks that I could build things out of in the end. I actually built a pretty nice looking shoe rack LOL. Anyway, as you might have guessed, the pen and paper became my best friends and I spent hours upon hours without no distraction, just drawing and drawing. The amount of characters  I came out with was just unbelievable. Could probably have written quite a few comic books for them.

This picture got featured as a Daily Deviation on DeviantART and gave me a super boost. I was so proud (and still am) of this piece. It is one out of few that have actually hung on my walls. I only just recently took it down as I felt that I am on a different path as an artist now and ready to explore new grounds. So that is what my art used to be like.  Changed a bit huh? What I will always take with me from this time though is the knowledge I gained both in traditional mediums and digital painting. I also learned so much about the human form and really gained a higher level as an artist.
